Mojonetworks: handwoven Ghanaian textiles

The Mojonetworks story

We started by asking who wove it

Most West African textiles reach international buyers through so many hands that the weaver's name is lost by the second one. We built the business the other way round, starting at the loom, in Bonwire, and working outward.

Every cloth we sell records where it was woven and by whom. Every partner we source for gets the same record. That is the whole proposition: not just the cloth, but its provenance intact.

How it is made

Four inches at a time, on a treadle loom

A weaver sets the warp, the long threads held under tension, then passes the weft across by hand. A single cloth is built from strips no wider than a forearm, each one finished before the next begins, then sewn edge to edge.

One full cloth takes a master weaver three to six weeks.

The cloth

Every colour carries a meaning

Gold for royalty and worth. Blue for harmony and the sky. Green for renewal, black for maturity and spiritual strength. A weaver chooses a pattern the way a writer chooses a sentence. The cloth says something specific before anyone wears it.

We list the pattern name and its meaning on every piece we sell.
